Virtual Education in Idaho

March 14, 2008
The Idaho Virtual Academy has been around for six years now. They offer schooling that starts at kindergarten and goes all the way through high school. It's a form of schooling that many don't know about, and some might benefit from.

One home looks like your average home, but inside it's a school for three young girls. The Idaho Virtual Academy is a public school that you can run from your own home. Heidi Higgins was one of the first people to enroll her kids in this program, and she couldn't be happier.

Heide Higgins, Idaho Virtual Academy mom: "At first, I thought it was too good to be true, that you don't have to pay for the computer or the curriculum and the teachers - that these things would be coming to my home as a taxpayer."

And the school's curriculum is set up just like any other. The kids that are in grades 1 through 8 have one teacher, and the high schoolers have one teacher for each class. The girls say the best part about this form of schooling is they get to learn the way they want and when they want.

Tiffany Higgins, in the 11th grade:  "I like the freedom to work at my own pace. If I don't understand something, I can spend an extra day on it."

Jaclyn Higgins, in the 9th grade: "If I need to take a nap, I can take a nap; I don't have to sit through a class and be tired."

The school also provides social outings for their students, and some of the girls are enrolled in extracurricular activities with the local schools. They say they get the best of both worlds, and don't feel like they are missing out on any school experiences.

Holly Higgins, in the 6th grade:  "I am learning the same things; I still have friends. I just don't have to sit in school for 6 hours. I'm sitting at home being comfortable."

And they don't have to worry about their safety. With all the school shootings that have happened across the country, they say it's nice to know that won't happen to them.
