Celebrating Idaho's New Interactive School Map and a Call to Expand School Choice
/Celebrating Idaho's New Interactive School Map and a Call to Expand School Choice
Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. That’s why the Idaho State Board of Education’s launch of the "Mapping School Choice in the Gem State" interactive tool is a welcome development. This tool provides a clearer picture of the educational options available in our communities, helping families make more informed decisions.
While this map is a step forward, families in Idaho and nationwide continue to call for more educational options. A survey by the nonprofit Parents for School Options found that 82% of parents support Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), with 67% expressing strong support. Support rises to 86% when ESAs include flexible options like online learning. These programs let families tailor funds to their child’s needs, such as learning materials, tutoring, or private school tuition.
A January 2025 survey by the National School Choice Week Awareness Foundation showed that 60% of parents considered new schools for their children, with even higher rates among military families (84%). These findings highlight the importance of flexible and innovative education options.
Idaho’s Governor’s Empowering Parents Grant Program is another important step. It helps families cover supplemental education costs, such as tutoring and learning materials. Expanding eligibility to include private school and homeschool families would ensure all Idaho students can benefit. Programs like this reflect successful efforts in other states, giving families tools to better support their children’s education.
At the Coalition of Idaho Charter School Families, we’ve long championed the expansion of public charter schools because they help students thrive. But charter schools are only part of the solution. Families rely on a variety of options—public schools, private schools, online programs, and homeschooling—to meet their children’s needs. Supporting these choices strengthens Idaho’s education system by prioritizing students.
The interactive map highlights the variety of educational opportunities in Idaho and points to where more options are needed. It’s a reminder that families are still searching for the right fit for their children. Expanding options like ESAs, charter schools, and programs like the Empowering Parents Grant will ensure every child can access an education that sets them up for success.
Parents have made it clear: they value flexibility, innovation, and the freedom to choose. With tools like the interactive map and forward-thinking programs, Idaho is making progress. But there’s more work to do to ensure every family has the resources and options they deserve.
